The Black-Necked Cranes of Phobjikha Valley

Phobjikha Valley is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike. The valley is part of the Black Mountains National Park and is designated as a conservation area, home to the rare and endangered black-necked cranes.

A winter migration

These majestic birds migrate from the Tibetan plateau to Phobjikha every winter, adding a magical touch to an already picturesque valley. Thousands of visitors come to Phobjikha to witness them.

The Black-Necked Crane Festival

The valley hosts the Black-Necked Crane Festival at Gangtey Monastery every year on 11 November. It celebrates the arrival of the cranes with traditional dances, music and educational programmes about these graceful birds, a unique chance to see Bhutanese culture and conservation in harmony.

Gangtey Monastery

Gangtey Monastery plays a central role in Bhutanese Buddhism. It is a training centre for monks, preserving ancient rituals, texts and teachings, and hosts the annual Gangtey Tshechu.
