Taktsang Monastery, better known as the Tiger’s Nest, is one of the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries. It is perched on the side of a cliff 900 m above the Paro valley floor, and it is the hike that almost every visitor remembers most.
The legend
It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this spot, which is why it is called the Tiger’s Nest. The site is recognised as one of the most sacred places in Bhutan. Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal visited in 1646, and today nearly every Bhutanese makes the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
Kyichu Lhakhang on the way
Along the way, our tours visit the 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the 108 temples built across the Himalayas by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Its construction marks the introduction of Buddhism to Bhutan.
When to do the hike
We schedule the hike for the last full day in Paro, after you have had a few days to adjust to the altitude. Start right after breakfast and plan to rest at your hotel in the evening.
Tours that include the Tiger’s Nest
The hike is included in every one of our classic Bhutan tours, from the Best of Bhutan Tour – 6 Days to the Discover Bhutan Tour – 14 Days.
